Luke the beloved physician wrote how, “the men that held Jesus mocked him, and smote him. And when they had blindfolded him, they struck him on the face, and asked him, saying, Prophesy, who is it that smote you? And many other things blasphemously spoke they against him. And as soon as it was day, the elders of the people and the chief priests and the scribes came together, and led him into their council, saying, Are you the Christ? tell us. And he said unto them, If I tell you, you will not believe”, and in chapter twenty-two and verse sixty-eight of his book Luke shared how Jesus said, “if I also ask you, you will not answer me” where we read:
And if I also ask you, you will not answer me, nor let me go.
The verse reads, “And if I also ask you, ...” Luke began with the words, “and if I also” or “and whether I, Jesus, even so and indeed” “ask you” which means “inquire of and question you, religious leaders” the following will not occur. Luke shared how Jesus told the religious leaders who were in the “Sanhedrin” even if He asked them the following question they would not respond in favor.
The verse goes on to say, “... you will not answer me, nor let me go” Luke continued with the words, “you will not answer me” which means “you, religious leaders, respond and and begin to speak to me, Jesus”, “nor let me go” or “no and not in any way would the religious leaders release Him and set Him free”. Luke shared how Jesus told the “religious leaders” they would not respond to Him and they would not release Him even if He answered their question.
When we think through Luke's words in this verse, we realize Jesus knew how the “religious leaders” in the “Sanhedrin” would respond to Him even if He answered whether He was the Christ. Jesus knows everything about everyone, and He needed to suffer and die so people could be saved. Those who carefully study Jesus' words will find Him deliberate in His purpose to pay the price for the sins of the world, and when they gain understanding by the Holy Spirit of God, they should turn their hearts and minds toward Him and receive Him as their personal “Savior and Lord”.
Next time Luke shares how Jesus says, “hereafter shall the Son of man sit on the right hand of the power of God”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
