Luke the beloved physician wrote as Jesus was hanging on the cross, “when the centurion saw what was done, he glorified God, saying, Certainly this was a righteous man. And all the people that came together to that sight, beholding the things which were done, smote their breasts, and returned. And all his acquaintance, and the women that followed him from Galilee, stood afar off, beholding these things”, and in chapter twenty-three and verse fifty of his book Luke shared about, “a man named Joseph” where we read:
And, behold, there was a man named Joseph, a counselor; and he was a good man, and a just:
The verse reads, “And, behold, there was a man named Joseph, a counselor;” Luke began with the words, “and behold” or “and lo, look and consider”, “there was a man named Joseph” which means “there existed a male human being who was called Joseph which means let him add”, “a counselor” or “and Joseph was an adviser, senator and member of the Sanhedrin”. Luke shared how there existed a man “named Joseph” who was a member of the Sanhedrin and an adviser among the people.
The verse goes on to say, “... and he was a good man, and a just:” Luke continued with the words, “and he was a good man” which means “and Joseph existed as a useful, salutary, pleasant, agreeable, happy and joyful male human being”, “and a just” or “and a righteous, virtuous, faultless and guiltless man as well”. Luke shared how “Joseph” was considered to be a “pleasant, agreeable, joyful and happy man” and “righteous” as well.
When we meditate upon Luke's words in this verse, we learn about a man named “Joseph” who was a member of the Sanhedrin and considered to be a “good” or “righteous” man among the people. In other words, “Joseph” had great integrity and a good reputation, and he was to be used in an instrumental way with the body of Jesus. We shall see how God uses “Joseph” in our next verse, but for now let all who read these words draw from the “reputation” of “Joseph” and receive Jesus as their personal “Savior and Lord”.
Next time Luke shares how “Joseph” was, “of Arimathaea, a city of the Jews”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
