Luke the beloved physician wrote how, “there was a man named Joseph, a counselor; and he was a good man, and a just. (The same had not consented to the counsel and deed of them;) he was of Arimathaea, a city of the Jews: who also himself waited for the kingdom of God”, and in chapter twenty-three and verse fifty-two of his book Luke shared how Joseph of Arimathaea, “went unto Pilate, and begged the body of Jesus” where we read:
This man went unto Pilate, and begged the body of Jesus.
The verse reads, “This man went unto Pilate, ...” Luke began with the words, “This man” or “this particular male human being or Joseph” “went unto Pilate” which means “approached and drew near to Pilate whose name means armed with a spear and was the sixth Roman procurator of Judah and Samaria who ordered Christ to be crucified”. Luke shared how Joseph approached “Pilate” to do the following.
The verse goes on to say, “... and begged the body of Jesus.” Luke continued with the words, “and begged” which means “and asked for, craved, desired and required” “the body of Jesus” or “the physical body belonging to the Son of God, the Savior of mankind and God incarnate whose name means Jehovah is Salvation”. Luke shared how Joseph “asked and pled for” “Pilate” to give Jesus' body to him.
When we think through Luke's words in this verse, we understand how “Joseph of Arimathaea” acted upon His belief in Jesus. Though “Joseph” could do nothing about “Jesus” dying, he wanted to take possession of the physical “body” in which He lived. Once again this aligned with the plan of God to bring “salvation” to mankind. God loves every person, and He allowed His Son Jesus to endure all these things, even the pleading of “Joseph”, to offer “salvation and forgiveness” to them. Let all who read these words yield their lives to the one who is the “Savior and Lord” of the world.
Next time Luke shares how “Joseph of Arimathaea” took Jesus' body, “wrapped it in linen, and laid it in a sepulcher”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
