Barabbas was Cast into Prison - Luke 23:19

Luke the beloved physician wrote how Pilate said of Jesus, “I, having examined him before you, have found no fault in this man touching those things whereof you accuse him. No, nor yet Herod: for I sent you to him; and, lo, nothing worthy of death is done unto him. I will therefore chastise him, and release him. (For of necessity he must release one unto them at the feast.) And they cried out all at once, saying, Away with this man, and release unto us Barabbas”, and in chapter twenty-three and verse nineteen of his book Luke parenthetically shared, “(Who for a certain sedition made in the city, and for murder, was cast into prison)” where we read:

(Who for a certain sedition made in the city, and for murder, was cast into prison.)

The verse reads, “(Who for a certain sedition made in the city, ... Luke began with the words, “Who for a certain sedition or “who, Barabbas, because, since and on account of a particular strife and insurrection” “made in the city” which means “performed, wrought and happened within the dwelling place, habitation and abode”. Luke shared how “Barabbas” was in prison because he caused a great “insurrection” within “the city” Jerusalem.

The verse continues, “... and for murder, was cast into prison.) Luke added the words, “and for murder” which means “and because of slaughter and slaying”, “was cast into prison” or “was thrown, inserted and thrust into a guard, sentinel and place where captives are kept”. Luke shared how Barabbas was put in prison because during the “insurrection” he killed or slaughtered people in the “city”.

When we meditate upon Luke's words in this verse, we gain greater knowledge as to why “Barabbas” was in prison. He led an “insurrection, revolt or rebellion” within the city of Jerusalem which resulted in him “murdering” people. This “murdering insurrectionist” was the person whom the “religious leaders and crowd” desired to have instead of Jesus. Jesus came to die for the sins of every person, and when they put their faith and trust in Him as their personal “Savior and Lord”, they shall be forgiven of their sins and receive everlasting life with God. Let all who read these words submit themselves to Jesus and never follow the crowd who desire others to be lord rather than him.

Next time we see Luke share how the religious leaders and multitude, “cried, saying, Crucify him, crucify him”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
