Elders, Chief Priests and Scribes Lead Jesus - Luke 22:66

Luke the beloved physician wrote how, “the men that held Jesus mocked him, and smote him. And when they had blindfolded him, they struck him on the face, and asked him, saying, Prophesy, who is it that smote you? And many other things blasphemously spoke they against him”, and in chapter twenty-two and verse sixty-six of his book Luke shared, “as soon as it was day, the elders of the people and the chief priests and the scribes came together” where we read:

And as soon as it was day, the elders of the people and the chief priests and the scribes came together, and led him into their council, saying,

The verse reads, “And as soon as it was day, the elders of the people and the chief priests and the scribes came together, ... Luke began with the words, “and as soon as it was day or “and even as and when the daylight, sunrise or dawn appeared”, “the elders” which means “the presbytery, senate, council or overseers” “of the people” or “belonging to the Jewish people both male and female” “and the chief priests” which means “and the high and principal priests” “and the scribes” or “and the men who were learned in the Mosaic law and in the sacred writings and served as an interpreters and teachers” “came together” which means “assembled, collected and gathered together”. Luke shared how the leaders of the Jewish people assembled as soon as the new day appeared.

The verse goes on to say, “... and led him into their council, saying, Luke continued with the words, “and led him” which means “and brought or carried Jesus” “into their council” which means “into the religious leaders' assembly of the Sanhedrin or great council at Jerusalem which consisted of seventy one members including scribes, elders and prominent members of the high priestly families and the high priest”, “saying” or “uttering, declaring and proclaiming” the words in our next verse. Luke shared how the people who captured Jesus brought Him to the “assembly” of the “Sanhedrin” where they proclaimed the words in our next verse.

When we consider Luke's words in this verse, we learn how Jesus was brought to the assembly of the “Sanhedrin” where He was to be tried. Jesus was kept over night after He was beaten and mocked by His captors, and early the next morning He was “led” to this tribunal. Jesus endured these things to provide “salvation” for every person who believes and trusts in Him, and when anyone carefully considers all Jesus did to acquire their entrance into Heaven, they should yield their lives to Him and avoid facing the “tribunal” of God.

Next time Luke shares how the religious leaders ask Jesus, “are you the Christ?”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.

Until tomorrow…there is more…
