Jesus Looks at Peter and He Remembered - Luke 22:61

Luke the beloved physician wrote how the religious leaders took Jesus, “and led him, and brought him into the high priest's house. And Peter followed afar off. And when they had kindled a fire in the midst of the hall, and were set down together, Peter sat down among them. But a certain maid beheld him as he sat by the fire, and earnestly looked upon him, and said, This man was also with him. And he denied him, saying, Woman, I know him not. And after a little while another saw him, and said, you are also of them. And Peter said, Man, I am not. And about the space of one hour after another confidently affirmed, saying, Of a truth this fellow also was with him: for he is a Galilaean. And Peter said, Man, I know not what you are saying. And immediately, while he yet spoke, the cock crew”, and in chapter twenty-two and verse sixty-one of his book Luke shared how, “the Lord turned, and looked upon Peter. And Peter remembered the word of the Lord” where we read:

And the Lord turned, and looked upon Peter. And Peter remembered the word of the Lord,

how he had said unto him, Before the cock crow, you shall deny me three times.

The verse reads, “And the Lord turned, and looked upon Peter. And Peter remembered the word of the Lord, ... Luke began with the words, “and the Lord turned or “and the One to whom a person or thing belongs, about which he has power of deciding; master and the title given to God the Messiah turned himself about”, “and looked upon Peter” which means “and turned His eyes and gaze toward Peter who was His disciple and whose name means a little rock or stone”. “And Peter remembered the word” or “and Peter, Jesus' disciple, recalled and brought back to mind the utterance, speech and declaration” “of the Lord” which means “belonging to the One to whom a person or thing belongs, about which he has power of deciding; master and the title given to God the Messiah”. Luke shared how Jesus turned His eyes upon Peter, and Peter recalled what He said to Him.

The verse continues, “... how he had said unto him, Before the cock crow, you shall deny me three times. Luke added the words, “how he had said unto him” which means “in the way and manner Jesus uttered, declared and proclaimed to Peter”, “Before the cock crow” which means “in advance and prior to the rooster crowing”, “you shall deny me three times” or “you, Peter, will assert that you do not know me, Jesus, three different times”. Luke shared how Peter “remembered” how Jesus told Him he would “deny” Him “three times” before the rooster “crowed”.

When we think through Luke's words in this verse, we discover the fulfillment of Jesus' words to Peter concerning his denial. Though Peter thought himself to be stronger than he actually was, he folded when the pressure was on. Peter denied Jesus three times and the rooster crowed, and as the proverbs says, Pride goes before destruction, and an haughty spirit before a fall” (See Proverbs 16:18). God knows everyone is in need of a “Savior”, and He sent His Son Jesus to die for the sins of all mankind. Those who are wise will humble themselves before Him and receive His Son Jesus as their personal “Lord and Savior”.

Next time Luke shares how, Peter went out, and wept bitterly”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
