Jesus Unseen - Luke 24:24

Luke the beloved physician wrote after women told the disciples about Jesus being raised from the dead, “Then arose Peter, and ran unto the sepulcher; and stooping down, he beheld the linen clothes laid by themselves, and departed, wondering in himself at that which was come to pass. And, behold, two of them went that same day to a village called Emmaus, which was from Jerusalem about threescore furlongs. And they talked together of all these things which had happened. And it came to pass, that, while they communed together and reasoned, Jesus himself drew near, and went with them. But their eyes were holden that they should not know him. And he said unto them, What manner of communications are these that you have one to another, as you walk, and are sad? And the one of them, whose name was Cleopas, answering said unto him, Are you only a stranger in Jerusalem, and have not known the things which are come to pass there in these days? And he said unto them, What things? And they said unto him, Concerning Jesus of Nazareth, which was a prophet mighty in deed and word before God and all the people. And how the chief priests and our rulers delivered him to be condemned to death, and have crucified him. But we trusted that it had been he which should have redeemed Israel: and beside all this, to day is the third day since these things were done. Yes, and certain women also of our company made us astonished, which were early at the sepulcher. And when they found not his body, they came, saying, that they had also seen a vision of angels, which said that he was alive”, and in chapter twenty-four and verse twenty-four of his book Luke shared how “Cleopas” said, “certain of them which were with us went to the sepulcher … but they saw him not” where we read:

And certain of them which were with us went to the sepulcher,

and found it even so as the women had said: but him they saw not.

The verse reads, “And certain of them which were with us went to the sepulcher, ... Luke began with the words, “and certain of them which were with us or “and particular ones of the disciples” “went to the sepulcher” which means “left and departed to the tomb or grave where Jesus was buried”. Luke shared how some of the disciples of Jesus went to the “tomb” where Jesus was buried.

The verse goes on to say, “... and found it even so as the women had said: but him they saw not.” Luke continued with the words, “and found it” which means “and discovered, noticed and discerned that the tomb” “even so as the women had said” or “was indeed just as the women uttered, declared and proclaimed that it was”: “but him they saw not” which means “however, nevertheless, notwithstanding and moreover the disciples who went to the tomb where Jesus was buried did not see Jesus there”. Luke shared how Jesus' disciples who went to the tomb found it empty just like the women describe, however, they did not “see” Jesus there.

When we consider Luke's words in this verse, we learn how “Cleopas” continued to tell Jesus the story about disciples going to the tomb where Jesus was buried and found it empty. They did not see Jesus there, but were indeed “wondering” what all this meant. Jesus will help “Cleopas” and the other disciple in our next verse, but for now let it suffice us to know that Jesus knows everything. Nothing is a mystery to Him, and when He carried out His plan to bring “salvation” to mankind, He gave an opportunity for everyone to be forgiven of their sins and to inherit everlasting life with God. Let all who read these words understand and believe.

Next time Luke shares how Jesus says, “O fools, and slow of heart to believe all the prophets have spoken”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
