Luke the beloved physician wrote, “when Herod saw Jesus, he was exceeding glad: for he was desirous to see him of a long season, because he had heard many things of him; and he hoped to have seen some miracle done by him. Then he questioned with him in many words; but he answered him nothing. And the chief priests and scribes stood and vehemently accused him. And Herod with his men of war set him at nought, and mocked him, and arrayed him in a gorgeous robe, and sent him again to Pilate”, and in chapter twenty-three and verse twelve of his book Luke shared how, “the same day Pilate and Herod were made friends together” where we read:
And the same day Pilate and Herod were made friends together:
for before they were at enmity between themselves.
The verse reads, “And the same day Pilate and Herod were made friends together:” Luke began with the words, “and the same day or “and the selfsame sunrise to sunset” “Pilate” whose name means “armed with a spear and was the sixth Roman procurator of Judah and Samaria” “and Herod” whose name means “heroic and was the name of a royal family that flourished among the Jews in the times of Christ and the Apostles” “were made friends together” which means “happened as and became associates and companions with one another”. Luke shared how “Pilate and Herod” became “associates and companions” the day Pilate sent Jesus to Herod and Herod sent Jesus back to Pilate.
The verse continues, “for before they were at enmity between themselves.” Luke added the words, “for before they were at enmity” which means “because, since and on account that prior to this time Pilate and Herod were in opposition and adversarial” “between themselves” or “in regards to one another”. Luke shared how “Pilate and Herod” were “adversaries” prior to this time.
When we meditate upon Luke's words in this verse, we learn how “Pilate and Herod” became “companions” after their encounter with Jesus. Before this time they were “adversaries”, but because Jesus stood before them, they became “associates”. It is interesting how people who are generally opposed to one another can align with one another after engaging Jesus. Those who oppose Jesus often become “friends”, but there is no relationship that is more important than the one with Jesus Christ. Those who are wise will carefully consider this “friendship” of “Pilate and Herod” and chose to align themselves in a relationship with Jesus instead.
Next time we see Luke shares how Pilate, “called together the chief priests and the rulers and the people”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
