Luke the beloved physician wrote how, “the men that held Jesus mocked him, and smote him. And when they had blindfolded him, they struck him on the face, and asked him, saying, Prophesy, who is it that smote you?”, and in chapter twenty-two and verse sixty-five of his book Luke shared, “many other things blasphemously spoke they against him” where we read:
And many other things blasphemously spoke they against him.
The verse reads, “And many other things blasphemously spoke they ...” Luke began with the words, “and many other things” or “and lots and a great number of other words of condemnation” “blasphemously spoke they” which means “did the men who captured Jesus reproachfully speak as to vilify, defame, revile and make evil”. Luke shared how Jesus' captors continued to say “reproachful and vile” things.
The verse continues, “... against him.” Luke added the word, “against” which means “in opposition to and toward” “him” which refers to “Jesus”. Luke shared how the men who arrested Jesus “spoke” evil things in opposition to Jesus.
When we consider Luke's words in this verse, we learn how these men who arrested Jesus continued to pile on their “reproachful and vile” words “against” Jesus. They obviously had no idea who Jesus was. The Son of God, Savior of the world and God incarnate was among them, and they spoke “evil” against Him. Jesus, however, endured their “vile” words because He knew they were the very reason He came to the world. They all, including us, needed a “Savior”, and only He, who was perfect in every way, could pay the price for their redemption with God. God desires to have a personal relationship with everyone through His Son Jesus, and when they think through all Jesus endured on their behalf, they should yield their life to Him to be forgiven of their sins and receive everlasting life with God. Let all who read these words take heed.
Next time Luke shares, “as soon as it was day, the elders of the people and the chief priests and the scribes came together”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
