Luke the beloved physician wrote how Pilate concerning Jesus, “called together the chief priests and the rulers and the people, Said unto them, You have brought this man unto me, as one that perverts the people: and, behold, I, having examined him before you, have found no fault in this man touching those things whereof you accuse him. No, nor yet Herod: for I sent you to him; and, lo, nothing worthy of death is done unto him”, and in chapter twenty-three and verse sixteen of his book Luke shared how Pilate said, “I will … chastise him, and release him” where we read:
I will therefore chastise him, and release him.
The verse reads, “I will therefore chastise him, ...” Luke began with the words, “I will therefore” or “I, Pilate, then, wherefore and consequently” “chastise him” which means “instruct, admonish, and afflict with blows such as scourging Jesus”, “and release him” or “and set free, dismiss and detain Jesus no longer”. Luke shared how Pilate told the “religious leaders” and the crowd that he would “punish” Jesus and set Him free.
The verse goes on to say, “... and release him.” Luke continued with the words, “and release” which means “and set free, dismiss and detain no longer” “him” which refers to “Jesus”. Luke shared how Pilate told the “chief priests, rulers and people” that he would set Jesus free and detain Him no longer.
When we think through Luke's words in this verse, we learn how “Pilate” attempted to appease the “religious leaders and people” by “beating and scourging” Jesus and then setting Him free. God's desire was to allow Jesus to go through this process so mankind would have an opportunity to be forgiven for their sins. Anyone who carefully considers all these events concerning Jesus should yield their lives to Him as their personal “Savior and Lord”, and when they do, they shall be forgiven of their sins and receive everlasting life with God in Heaven.
Next time we see Luke parenthetically shares, “for of necessity he must release one unto them at the feast”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
