Luke the beloved physician wrote when Jesus was condemned to be crucified, “as they led him away, they laid hold upon one Simon, a Cyrenian, coming out of the country, and on him they laid the cross, that he might bear it after Jesus. And there followed him a great company of people, and of women, which also bewailed and lamented him. But Jesus turning unto them said, Daughters of Jerusalem, weep not for me, but weep for yourselves, and for your children. For, behold, the days are coming, in the which they shall say, Blessed are the barren, and the wombs that never bare, and the paps which never gave suck”, and in chapter twenty-three and verse thirty of his book Luke shared how Jesus says people will, “begin to say to the mountains, fall on us; and to the hills, cover us” where we read:
Then shall they begin to say to the mountains, Fall on us; and to the hills, Cover us.
The verse reads, “Then shall they begin to say to the mountains, Fall on us;” Luke began with the words, “Then shall they begin to say” or “at that time shall the people start and initiate declaring, proclaiming and uttering” “to the mountains” which means “toward the risings above the plain and hills”, “Fall on us” or “descend and be thrust down upon we, people”. Luke shared how the difficulties will be so great that people who are alive will call out to the “mountains” to be “thrust down” upon them.
The verse goes on to say, “and to the hills, Cover us.” Luke continued with the words, “and to the hills” which means “and to the eminences and mounds to”, “Cover us” or “hide, veil and hinder we, people from the knowledge of these things”. Luke shared how the people would also call out to the “mounds” to “hide and veil” them from the troubles.
When we think through Luke's words in this verse, we learn more about how horrible it will be in the days ahead of the people in Jerusalem. People will be so desperate to be removed from the troubles, they will actually call out for the “mountains and hills” to “fall” upon them and “hide” them. God knew all these things would come to pass, and His desire is that every person would receive His Son Jesus as their personal “Savior and Lord” to help them in these times. God is aware of the future both on earth and in Heaven, and those who are wise will align with His Son and yield to Him.
Next time Luke shares how Jesus asks, “if they do these things in a green tree, what shall be done in the dry?”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
