Luke the beloved physician wrote how, “there was a man named Joseph, a counselor; and he was a good man, and a just. (The same had not consented to the counsel and deed of them;) he was of Arimathaea, a city of the Jews: who also himself waited for the kingdom of God. This man went unto Pilate, and begged the body of Jesus. And he took it down, and wrapped it in linen, and laid it in a sepulcher that was hewn in stone,wherein never man before was laid. And that day was the preparation, and the sabbath drew on. And the women also, which came with him from Galilee, followed after, and beheld the sepulcher, and how his body was laid”, and in chapter twenty-three and verse fifty-six of his book Luke shared how the women, “returned, and prepared spices and ointments” where we read:
And they returned, and prepared spices and ointments;
and rested the sabbath day according to the commandment.
The verse reads, “And they returned, and prepared spices and ointments;” Luke began with the words, “And they returned” or “and the women who accompanied Joseph to the place where Jesus was buried turned back to their homes”, “and prepared spices” which means “and made ready perfumes or aromatic scents” “and ointments” or “and myrrh or perfumed oil”. Luke shared how the “women” who followed Joseph to see where Jesus was buried went home to “make ready” “aromatic scents and perfumed oils” for Jesus' body.
The verse goes on to say, “and rested the sabbath day according to the commandment.” Luke continued with the words, “and rested” which means “and kept quiet, silent and ceased from labor on” “the sabbath day” or “the seventh day of each week which was a sacred festival on which the Israelites were required to abstain from all work” “according to the commandment” which means “down from and toward the precept, order and injunction of God”. Luke shared how the “women” prepared their “spices and ointments” before the “Sabbath Day” of rest began, and they rested from all word on that day.
When we think through Luke's words in this verse, we learn how these “women” were expeditious in their efforts to prepare “aromatic scents and perfumed oil” before the “Sabbath Day” began. They knew, according to God's law, they were not to “work” on the “Sabbath”, so they worked to have everything completed before that day began. Each of these details were in alignment with the plan of God to provide “salvation” for man, and as we see what these “women” did with their “spices and ointments”, let us be mindful that God's plan was being worked out for the benefit of mankind. Everyone who yields their life to His Son Jesus will be “saved” and given “everlasting life”, and each detail in Jesus' life, death and burial aligns with that purpose.
Next time we begin a new chapter and see Luke share what happened, “upon the first day of the week, very early in the morning”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
