Luke the beloved physician wrote when Jesus was hanging on the cross, He said, “Father, forgive them; for they know not what they do. And they parted his raiment, and cast lots. And the people stood beholding. And the rulers also with them derided him, saying, He saved others; let him save himself, if he be Christ, the chosen of God. And the soldiers also mocked him, coming to him, and offering him vinegar, ...”, and in chapter twenty-three and verse thirty-seven of his book Luke shared how the soldiers said, “if you are the king of the Jews, save yourself” where we read:
And saying, If you be the king of the Jews, save yourself.
The verse reads, “And saying, If you be the king of the Jews, ...” Luke began with the words, “and saying” or “and uttering, declaring and proclaiming”, “If you be the king” which means “whether it be so that you, Jesus, are the leader, prince, commander and lord” “of the Jews” or “pertaining to the Jewish nation”. Luke shared how the “soldiers” were telling Jesus since He was supposedly the “ruler, prince and lord” of the Jewish nation and people to do the following.
The verse continues, “... save yourself.” Luke added the words, “save” which means “rescue from danger and destruction” “yourself” or “your own self”. Luke shared how the “soldiers” told Jesus to “rescue” His own self since He was the Jews' king.
When we consider Luke's words in this verse, we learn what the “Roman soldiers” were “saying” to Jesus while He hung on the cross. They were making fun of Him as they mocked Him for being the Jews' “king”. They thought if He was able to “save” people as the “king of the Jews”, certainly He should be able to “save” Himself. However, Jesus could not “save himself” because if He did, no one else could be saved. God loves people, and the reason Jesus came to the earth was to die for the sins of every person. Those who are wise will carefully consider what Jesus did for them and receive Him as their personal “Savior and Lord”.
Next time Luke shares how, “a superscription also was written over” Jesus, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
