Luke the beloved physician wrote when Jesus was hanging on the cross, “it was about the sixth hour, and there was a darkness over all the earth until the ninth hour”, and in chapter twenty-three and verse forty-five of his book Luke shared how, “the sun was darkened, and the veil of the temple was rent” where we read:
And the sun was darkened, and the veil of the temple was rent in the midst.
The verse reads, “And the sun was darkened, ...” Luke began with the words, “And the sun” or “and the sun in the sky” “was darkened” which means “was made obscure and covered”. Luke shared how even the “sun” in the sky was “make dark” as Jesus hung on the cross.
The verse continues, “... and the veil of the temple was rent in the midst.” Luke added the words, “and the the veil of the temple” which means “and the curtain which separated the Holy of Holies from the Holy Place within the sacred worship place located in Jerusalem” “was rent” or “was torn, cleaved asunder, divided and split into factions” “in the midst” which means “in the middle”. Luke shared how the curtain within the “temple” in Jerusalem that separated the “Holy of Holies” from the “Holy Place” was torn down the middle into “two pieces”.
When we think through Luke's words in this verse, we learn how the “sun” was made “dark”, and the “temple” “veil” was torn right down the middle as Jesus hung on the cross. In other words, the “curtain” which separated mankind from God was “torn in two”, and because Jesus paid the price for the sins of the world, everyone who believes and trusts in Him have access to God. As the Hebrew writer said, “Let us therefore come boldly unto the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy, and find grace to help in time of need.” (See Hebrews 4:16)
Next time Luke shares, “when Jesus had cried with a loud voice, he said, Father, into you hands I commend my spirit”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
