What Evil has Jesus Done? - Luke 23:22

Luke the beloved physician wrote how Pilate said of Jesus, “I, having examined him before you, have found no fault in this man touching those things whereof you accuse him. No, nor yet Herod: for I sent you to him; and, lo, nothing worthy of death is done unto him. I will therefore chastise him, and release him. (For of necessity he must release one unto them at the feast.) And they cried out all at once, saying, Away with this man, and release unto us Barabbas. (Who for a certain sedition made in the city, and for murder, was cast into prison.) Pilate therefore, willing to release Jesus, spoke again to them. But they cried, saying, Crucify him, crucify him”, and in chapter twenty-three and verse twenty-two of his book Luke shared how Pilate, “said unto them the third time, why, what evil has he done?” where we read:

And he said unto them the third time, Why, what evil has he done?

I have found no cause of death in him: I will therefore chastise him, and let him go.

The verse reads, “And he said unto them the third time, Why, what evil has he done? Luke began with the words, “and he said unto them or “and Pilate uttered, declared and proclaimed to the religious leaders and multitude” “the third time” which means “on a third occasion”, “why” or “for what reason and cause”, “what evil has he done” which means “what harm, bad, wrong, wickedness or troublesome, injurious, pernicious, destructive and baneful acting had Jesus performed”? Luke shared how Pilate appealed to the “religious leaders and multitude” for a “third time” as he wondered what “wrong” Jesus did.

The verse goes on to say, “I have found no cause of death in him: I will therefore chastise him, and let him go. Luke continued with the words, “I have found” which means “I, Pilate, have discovered, seen, learned and understood” “no cause of death” or “not a single fault which should lead to Jesus dying” “in him” which means “within Jesus”: “I will therefore chastise him” or “I, Pilate, then, wherefore, consequently and on this account will castigate, admonish, scourge, and discipline Jesus”, “and let him go” which means “and allow Jesus to be set free and loosed”. Luke shared how Pilate once again told the people that he discovered no reason why Jesus should be put to “death”, and he offered to have Jesus punish and set free.

When we meditate upon Luke's words in this verse, we learn how “Pilate” once again, this “third time”, appealed to the “religious leaders and multitude”, to set Jesus free because he could not find anything Jesus did that was worthy of “death”. This was another affirmation that Jesus was “innocent”, and the only reason He was going through this trial was because He was to die for the sins of all mankind. Jesus, the innocent Son of God, had “no cause of death in him”, and yet, He died so people could be saved from their sins and receive everlasting life with God. .

Next time Luke shares how the crowd was, “instant with loud voices, requiring that he might be crucified”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
