Luke the beloved physician wrote after women told the disciples about Jesus being raised from the dead, “Then arose Peter, and ran unto the sepulcher; and stooping down, he beheld the linen clothes laid by themselves, and departed, wondering in himself at that which was come to pass. And, behold, two of them went that same day to a village called Emmaus, which was from Jerusalem about threescore furlongs. And they talked together of all these things which had happened. And it came to pass, that, while they communed together and reasoned, Jesus himself drew near, and went with them. But their eyes were holden that they should not know him. And he said unto them, What manner of communications are these that you have one to another, as you walk, and are sad? And the one of them, whose name was Cleopas, answering said unto him, Are you only a stranger in Jerusalem, and have not known the things which are come to pass there in these days? And he said unto them, What things? And they said unto him, Concerning Jesus of Nazareth, which was a prophet mighty in deed and word before God and all the people”, and in chapter twenty-four and verse twenty of his book Luke shared how Cleopas continued to share, “how the chief priests and our rulers delivered him to be condemned to death, and have crucified him” where we read:
And how the chief priests and our rulers delivered him to be condemned to death,
and have crucified him.
The verse reads, “And how the chief priests and our rulers delivered him to be condemned to death, ...” Luke began with the words, “And how the chief priests” or “and the manner in which the high and principal priests” “and our rulers” which means “and the people's commanders, leaders and magistrates” “delivered him” or “and gave Jesus over” “to be condemned to death” which means “to be judged, sentence and cursed to die”. Luke shared how Cleopas continued to inform Jesus as to the way the “high priests” and “leaders” gave “Jesus” to be “judged and adjudicated” to die.
The verse goes on to say, “... and have crucified him.” Luke continued with the words, “and have crucified” which means “and palisade, driven down with stakes, impaled on a cross and extinguished” “him” which refers to “Jesus”. Luke shared how Cleopas told Jesus how they nailed “Jesus” on a cross until He died.
When we consider Luke's words in this verse, we learn how “Cleopas” and the other disciple understood the events surrounding them. Though Jesus was with them, they thought they knew the whole story. They saw the “facts”, and they knew what they knew, but we shall see their knowledge was limited. Many people think they know all the “facts” concerning a circumstance or situation, but God actually knows every detail – both seen and unseen. God desires to have a personal relationship with every person through His Son Jesus because when things are known and unknown occur, there is a trust in Him that supersedes all. God knows the beginning to the end, and those who are wise put their faith and trust in His Son Jesus to be forgiven of their sins and receive everlasting life with Him.
Next time Luke shares how Cleopas said, “we trusted that it had been he which should have redeemed Israel”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
