Luke the beloved physician wrote how the religious leaders took Jesus, “and led him, and brought him into the high priest's house. And Peter followed afar off. And when they had kindled a fire in the midst of the hall, and were set down together, Peter sat down among them. But a certain maid beheld him as he sat by the fire, and earnestly looked upon him, and said, This man was also with him. And he denied him, saying, Woman, I know him not. And after a little while another saw him, and said, you are also of them. And Peter said, Man, I am not. And about the space of one hour after another confidently affirmed, saying, Of a truth this fellow also was with him: for he is a Galilaean”, and in chapter twenty-two and verse sixty of his book Luke shared, “Peter said, Man, I know not what you are saying. And immediately, while he yet spoke, the cock crew” where we read:
And Peter said, Man, I know not what you are saying.
And immediately, while he yet spake, the cock crew.
The verse reads, “And Peter said, Man, I know not what you are saying.” Luke began with the words, “and Peter said” or “and Peter whose name means a little rock or stone and was one of Jesus' disciples uttered, declared and proclaimed”, “Man” which means “male human being”, “I know not what you are saying” or “I, Peter, do not perceive, understand or pay attention to that which the man was uttering, declaring and proclaiming”. Luke shared how Peter told the man he did know know what he was “saying”.
The verse goes on to say, “And immediately, while he yet spoke, the cock crew.” Luke continued with the words, “and immediately” which means “and straightway and forthwith”, “while he yet spoke” which means “during the time when Peter was speaking or talking”, “the cock crew” or “a rooster cried aloud and emitted a sound”. Luke shared as soon as Peter denied he knew Jesus for the third time the rooster crowed.
When we think through Luke's words in this verse, we see the fulfillment of what Jesus said to Peter when he declared he would go to “prison and death” with Jesus. Jesus said the rooster would not “crow” that day until Peter denied Him three times, and when Peter did as Jesus said, the rooster crowed. God knows everything – past, present and future, and He knows what it takes to “save” mankind from His sinful nature. He sent His Son Jesus into the world to die for the sins of all mankind, and all who yield their lives to Him shall be forgiven of their sins and receive everlasting life with God. Those who are wise will submit themselves to Jesus and never align with the denial of Peter.
Next time Luke shares how, “the Lord turned, and looked upon Peter. And Peter remembered the word of the Lord”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
