Luke the beloved physician wrote after women told the disciples about Jesus being raised from the dead, “Then arose Peter, and ran unto the sepulcher; and stooping down, he beheld the linen clothes laid by themselves, and departed, wondering in himself at that which was come to pass. And, behold, two of them went that same day to a village called Emmaus, which was from Jerusalem about threescore furlongs. And they talked together of all these things which had happened. And it came to pass, that, while they communed together and reasoned, Jesus himself drew near, and went with them. But their eyes were holden that they should not know him. And he said unto them, What manner of communications are these that you have one to another, as you walk, and are sad? And the one of them, whose name was Cleopas, answering said unto him, Are you only a stranger in Jerusalem, and have not known the things which are come to pass there in these days? And he said unto them, What things? And they said unto him, Concerning Jesus of Nazareth, which was a prophet mighty in deed and word before God and all the people. And how the chief priests and our rulers delivered him to be condemned to death, and have crucified him. But we trusted that it had been he which should have redeemed Israel: and beside all this, to day is the third day since these things were done. Yes, and certain women also of our company made us astonished, which were early at the sepulcher”, and in chapter twenty-four and verse twenty-three of his book Luke shared how “Cleopas” continued by saying the women, “had also seen a vision of angels, which said he that he was alive” where we read:
And when they found not his body, they came, saying,
that they had also seen a vision of angels, which said that he was alive.
The verse reads, “And when they found not his body, they came, saying, ...” Luke began with the words, “and when” or “and at the time and moment” “they found not his body” which means “the women who went to the tomb where Jesus was buried they did not discover Jesus' physical body”, “they came” or “they arose and approached the disciples and followers of Jesus”, “saying” which means “uttering, declaring and proclaiming” the following words. Luke shared how the women who went to Jesus' tomb did not find His “body” there, and they came to the disciples declaring the following words.
The verse continues, “... that they had also seen a vision of angels, which said that he was alive.” Luke added the words, “that they had also seen” which means “that the women even so and indeed observed, perceived and experienced” “a vision of angels” or “a sight, appearance and apparition pertaining to messengers or envoys”, “which said that he was alive” which means “who uttered, declared and proclaimed that Jesus was among the breathing, not dead and in full vigor, power and efficaciousness”. Luke shared how the women told the “disciples” of Jesus they saw “angels” who told them that Jesus was “among the breathing and alive”.
When we think through Luke's words in this verse, we learn more of what “Cleopas” told Jesus as they walked together to “Emmaus”. “Cleopas” said at the time the women arrived at the tomb where Jesus' body was buried, He was not there, and the “angels” who met them there told them Jesus was “alive”. We can imagine how troubling this news was for the disciples, and even though the words of the women were true, they had a difficult time believing them. God knows every person, and His desire is to have a personal relationship with them through His Son Jesus. Jesus died and was resurrected so every person who believes and trusts in Him may be forgiven of their sins and inherit everlasting life with God. Let all who read these words believe.
Next time Luke shares how “Cleopas” continued by saying, “certain of them which were with us went to the sepulcher … but him they saw not”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
