Casting Out the Heathen - Psalms 78:55

In Psalms chapter seventy-eight Asaph reminded the people of Israel when they journeyed through the wilderness how Jehovah God, “led them on safely, so that they feared not: but the sea overwhelmed their enemies. And he brought them to the border of his sanctuary, even to this mountain, which his right hand had purchased”, and in chapter seventy-eight and verse fifty-four of Psalms Asaph said Jehovah God, “cast out the heathen also before them” where we read,

He cast out the heathen also before them, and divided them an inheritance by line,

and made the tribes of Israel to dwell in their tents.

The verse begins, “He cast out the heathen also before them, and divided them an inheritance by line, ... Asaph began with the words, “He cast out the heathen also” or “He, Jehovah God, even so and indeed drove out, expelled and thrust away the foreign, non-Hebrew and unbelieving nations” “before them” which means “in front and in the presence of them, the people of Israel”, “and divided them an inheritance” or “and assigned, apportioned and separated unto them, the people of Israel, a possession, property, heritage and share ” “by line” which means “through the means of a band, cord, territory and district”. Asaph said Jehovah God thrust out the people who were foreign to the people of Israel, and He apportioned possessions, territories and districts to the people.

The verse continues,... and made the tribes of Israel to dwell in their tents. Asaph added the words, “and made the tribes of Israel” or “and caused, settled and established the branches, offshoots and clans belonging to Israel whose name means God prevails and was the second name for Jacob given to him by God after his wrestling with the angel at Peniel ” “to dwell in their tents” which means “to settle down, reside, abide, inhabit and live within their, the people of Israel's, dwellings, home, habitation and sacred tabernacles”. Asaph said Jehovah God caused the clans of “Israel” to live within their tabernacles and habitations.

When we consider the words in this verse, we are reminded through Asaph about Jehovah God expelling the enemies and foreign nations in the presence of the people of Israel, and He caused them to inherit the land of the Gentiles. God decided what portion each of the tribes of Israel should obtain. God wanted a personal relationship with the people of Israel, and He desires the same with us today. He sent His Son Jesus into the world to be crucified on the cross and raised from the grave three days later to pay for the sins of all mankind. When we surrender to Him as our “Savior and Lord”, He will forgive our sins, grant us everlasting life and lead us into the possessions He wants us to have according to the portions He decides. (See Numbers 33:54)

Next time Asaph says the people, “tempted and provoked the most high God”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
