The Wrath of God - Psalms 78:31

In Psalms chapter seventy-eight Asaph shared when Jehovah God sent the people of Israel through the wilderness, “He rained flesh also upon them as dust, and feathered fowls like as the sand of the sea. And he let it fall in the midst of their camp, round about their habitations. So they did eat, and were well filled: for he gave them their own desire. They were not estranged from their lust. But while their meat was yet in their mouths, ...”, and in chapter seventy-eight and verse thirty-one of Psalms Asaph shared how, “the wrath of God came upon them” where we read,

The wrath of God came upon them, and slew the fattest of them,

and smote down the chosen men of Israel.

The verse begins, The wrath of God came upon them, and slew the fattest of them, ... Asaph began with the words, “the wrath of God came upon them” or “the anger which wrinkles the nose or face belonging to the Divine judge, ruler and Supreme God arose, ascended and was exalted”, “and slew the fattest of them” which means “and slayed, destroyed, ruined and killed the stoutest and most robust of them, the people of Israel”. Asaph said God's anger ascended upon the people of Israel and destroyed the stoutest of them.

The verse continues, “... and smote down the chosen men of Israel. Asaph added the words, “and smote down” or “and made to bow down and bend the knee” “the chosen men” which means “the youthful, selected and choice young male human beings” “of Israel” or “belonging to Israel whose name means God prevails and was the name of the descendants and the nation of the descendants of Jacob”. Asaph referred to how God made the choice and most select of the male human beings who belonged to Israel to bow their knees before Him.

When we meditate upon the words in this verse, we learn through Asaph how God responded in wrath to the covetousness of the people of Israel. Although He provided them with “meat” or “quail” in the wilderness, He became so angry with them that He destroyed the most stout of them, and subdued the choice young men among them. God loves people, and He sent His Son Jesus to die on the cross for the sins of all mankind. When we surrender to Him as our “Savior and Lord”, He will forgive our sins and grant us everlasting life, however, if we refuse and reject Him and His plan of salvation through Jesus, He will eventually respond in anger that shall cause our knees to bow unto Him. (See Romans 14:11 and Philippians 2:10)

Next time Asaph shares, “for all this they sinned still”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
