In Psalms chapter seventy-nine Asaph said, “Let the sighing of the prisoner come before you; according to the greatness of your power preserve you those that are appointed to die. And render unto our neighbors sevenfold into their bosom their reproach, wherewith they have reproached you, O Lord”, and in chapter seventy-nine and verse thirteen of Psalms Asaph said, “we your people and sheep of your pasture will give you thanks for ever”, where we read,
So we your people and sheep of your pasture will give you thanks for ever:
we will show forth your praise to all generations.
The verse begins, “So we your people and sheep of your pasture will give you thanks for ever:” Asaph began with the words, “so we your people” or “that we, Asaph and the people of Israel who were Jehovah God's, nation, country-men, compatriots, kinsmen and kindred” “and sheep of your pasture” which means “and small cattle like lambs in a flock belonging to your, Jehovah God's, pasturing, shepherding and flock” “will give you thanks” or “shall grant, bestow and offer thanksgiving, laud, praise and honor to you, Jehovah God” “for ever” which means “for long duration, futurity, everlastingness, continuous and perpetual existence”. Asaph said the result of Jehovah God “rendering” to his and the people of Israel's “neighbors sevenfold” the “reproach” they gave to them would be that he and the people of Israel would offer Him praise and thanks eternally.
The verse continues, “we will show forth your praise to all generations.” Asaph added the words, “we will show forth” or “we, Asaph and the people of Israel, shall recount, take account of and reckon” “your praise” which means “your, Jehovah God's, adoration, thanksgiving and renown” “to all generations” or “to each, every, the whole and everyone of the periods, ages and posterity”. Asaph said he and the people of Israel would recount the adoration, thanksgiving and renown of Jehovah God to all ages and periods of people.
When we mediate upon the words in this verse, we learn through Asaph how he and the people of Israel would respond to Jehovah God when He took vengeance upon their nearby heathen residents. They would not only offer Jehovah God “thanksgiving”, but would also share with all their posterity concerning the renown of God. God loves people, and His desire is to have a personal relationship with every one of us. He sent His Son Jesus into the world to die on the cross for the sins of all mankind, and when we believe and trust in Him as our “Savior and Lord”, He will forgive our sins, grant us everlasting life and allow us and our future generations to offer Him praise and thanksgiving forever.
Next time we begin a new chapter and see Asaph say, “Give ear, O Shepherd of Israel”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
