In Psalms chapter seventy-nine Asaph said, “O remember not against us former iniquities: let your tender mercies speedily prevent us: for we are brought very low”, and in chapter seventy-nine and verse nine of Psalms Asaph said, “help us, O God of our salvation”, where we read,
Help us, O God of our salvation, for the glory of your name:
and deliver us, and purge away our sins, for your name's sake.
The verse begins, “Help us, O God of our salvation, for the glory of your name:” Asaph began with the words, “Help us” or “ succor, support give aid to us, Asaph and the people of Israel”, “O God of our salvation” which means “O Divine judge, ruler and Supreme God belonging to our, Asaph and the people of Israel's deliverance, rescue, welfare, prosperity and victory” “for the glory of your name” or “on behalf of the honor, abundance, riches, splendor and reputation belonging to your, Jehovah God's, fame, reputation and glory”. Asaph appealed to Jehovah God by the reputation, fame and glory of His name to assist him because He was the Supreme God, judge and ruler of he and the people of Israel's deliverance, freedom, safety and rescue.
The verse continues, “and deliver us, and purge away our sins, for your name's sake.” Asaph added the words, “and deliver us” or “and rescue, save and preserve us, Asaph and the people of Israel”, “and purge away our sins” which means “and make an atonement for, reconcile, cover and pacify our, Asaph and the people of Israel's, guilt, offenses, errors and wrongs”, “for your name's sake” or “on behalf of your, Jehovah God's, fame, reputation and glory”. Asaph beckoned Jehovah God to rescue, cleanse from sins and save he and the people of Israel on behalf of His own reputation, fame and glory.
When we consider the words in this verse, we learn how Asaph cried out to Jehovah God to give aid and assistance to him and the people of Israel. He wanted God to cleanse them from their errors and wrongs for His own sake, and God would receive the glory, honor and reverence for doing so. God wants the same for us, He sent His Son Jesus into the world to die on the cross for the sins of all mankind, and when we rely upon, cling to and trust in Him, He will forgive our sin, grant us everlasting life and and wash away our mistakes, errors and wrongs. (See John 1:9)
Next time Asaph asks, “wherefore should the heathen say, Where is their God?”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
