Sinning Against God More - Psalms 78:17

In Psalms chapter seventy-eight Asaph said concerning Jehovah God, “Marvelous things did he in the sight of their fathers, in the land of Egypt, in the field of Zoan. He divided the sea, and caused them to pass through; and he made the waters to stand as an heap. In the daytime also he led them with a cloud, and all the night with a light of fire. He clave the rocks in the wilderness, and gave them drink as out of the great depths. He brought streams also out of the rock, and caused waters to run down like rivers”, and in chapter seventy-eight and verse seventeen of Psalms Asaph said, “they sinned yet more against him” where we read,

And they sinned yet more against him by provoking the most High in the wilderness.

The verse begins, And they sinned yet more against him ... Asaph began with the words, “and they sinned” or “and the people of Israel missed the goal or path of right and duty, went wrong, erred and trespassed” “yet more against him” which means “still, in continuance, to a greater degree and moreover in opposition to him, Jehovah God”. Asaph said the people of Israel went wrong and erred to a greater degree after God performed so many miracles before them.

The verse continues,... by provoking the most High in the wilderness. Asaph added the words, “by provoking the most High” or “through the means of being contentious, rebellious, refractory and disobedient toward the uppermost and Supreme One who is Jehovah God” “in the wilderness” which means “within the dry, barren, solitary, arid and desert place”. Asaph said the people “sinned” against Jehovah God by being contentious and disobedient to Him while they were in the solitary desert place.

When we consider the words in this verse, we see how Asaph recalled how the people of Israel rebelled against Jehovah God even though He performed marvelous acts and deeds for them. God provides for people all the time, and still, they defy Him and His ways. God loves us, and His desire is to have a personal relationship with us through His Son Jesus. He sent Jesus into the world to die for the sins of all mankind, and when we surrender our lives to Him, He will forgive our sins, grant us everlasting life and keep us from “provoking” Him all the days of our lives.

Next time Asaph says, “they tempted God in their heart”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
