In Psalms chapter seventy-eight Asaph shared when Jehovah God slew the people of Israel in the wilderness, “they remembered that God was their rock, and the high God their redeemer. Nevertheless they did flatter him with their mouth, and they lied unto him with their tongues. For their heart was not right with him, neither were they steadfast in his covenant. But he, being full of compassion, forgave their iniquity, and destroyed them not: yes, many a time turned he his anger away, and did not stir up all his wrath”, and in chapter seventy-eight and verse thirty-nine of Psalms Asaph shared how Jehovah God, “remembered that they were but flesh” where we read,
For he remembered that they were but flesh; a wind that passes away, and comes not again.
The verse begins, “For he remembered that they were but flesh;” Asaph began with the words, “for he remembered” or “because, since and on account that he, Jehovah God, recalled, brought to mind and was reminded” “that they were but flesh” which means “that they, the people of Israel in the wilderness, existed as nothing other than living beings or mankind”. Asaph said Jehovah God recalled that the people of Israel in the wilderness were simply human beings made of “flesh”.
The verse goes on to say, “a wind that passes away, and comes not again.” Asaph continued with the words, “a wind that passes away” or “a breath or being who is lead apart, separate, departed and gone forth”, “and comes not again” which means “and does not return another time”. Asaph referred to the brevity of the life of people who live as a vapor and do not return.
When we consider the words in this verse, we see how Asaph shared that Jehovah God recalled that the people of Israel in the wilderness existed as fleshly human beings. Their lives were like a breeze that comes and goes quickly. James said, “For what is your life? It is even a vapor, that appears for a little time, and then vanishes away” (See James 4:14), and Jehovah God knew this about the people of Israel. He knows it about us as well. God wants us to live forever with Him, and He sent His Son Jesus to die on the cross for our sins so we might be forgiven and granted everlasting life. When we submit to Him as our “Savior and Lord”, we may be assured that even though we may only briefly live on the earth, we shall live forever in Heaven with God.
Next time Asaph says, “How often did they provoke him in the wilderness”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
