Cleaving the Rocks in the Wilderness - Psalms 78:15

In Psalms chapter seventy-eight Asaph said, “Marvelous things did he in the sight of their fathers, in the land of Egypt, in the field of Zoan. He divided the sea, and caused them to pass through; and he made the waters to stand as an heap. In the daytime also he led them with a cloud, and all the night with a light of fire”, and in chapter seventy-eight and verse fifteen of Psalms Asaph said, “He clave the rocks in the wilderness” where we read,

He clave the rocks in the wilderness, and gave them drink as out of the great depths.

The verse begins, He clave the rocks in the wilderness, ... Asaph began with the words, “He clave the rocks” or “He, Jehovah God, split, broke open, divided and rent the block of stone” “in the wilderness” which means “within the uninhabited land, pasture or desert place”. Asaph recalled how Jehovah God cracked open the block of stone within the desert where the children of Israel were traveling.

The verse continues,... and gave them drink as out of the great depths. Asaph added the words, “and gave them drink” or “and irrigated, provided and furnished water” “as out of the great depths” which means “like unto the abounding, numerous and exceedingly deep subterranean waters or abyss”. Asaph shared how Jehovah God provided water from deep subterranean places for the people of Israel while they journeyed in the desert.

When we meditate upon the words in this verse, we see how Asaph referred to the time when Jehovah God blessed the people of Israel with water in the “wilderness”. (See Exodus 17:6 and Numbers 20:11) The people of Israel were extremely thirsty, and they were parched for drink. Moses struct the rocks in the wilderness on two different occasions, and although he was only to speak to the second rock, God provided water. God cares for people, and He sent His Son Jesus who is the rock of all ages to die on the cross for the sins of all mankind. When we humble ourselves, come to Him, believe and trust in Him as our personal “Savior and Lord”, He will forgive our sins, grant us everlasting life and provide us with wherever we need. Let us give praise, honor and glory to Jehovah God for His provision of “salvation” and the quenching of our spiritual thirst through His Son Jesus.

Next time Asaph says, “He brought streams also out of the rock”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
