Flies and Frogs - Psalms 78:45

In Psalms chapter seventy-eight Asaph reminded the people of Israel when they journey through the wilderness how Jehovah God, “had wrought his signs in Egypt, and his wonders in the field of Zoan: And had turned their rivers into blood; and their floods, that they could not drink”, and in chapter seventy-eight and verse forty-five of Psalms Asaph said Jehovah God, “sent divers sorts of flies … and frogs” where we read,

He sent divers sorts of flies among them, which devoured them; and frogs, which destroyed them.

The verse begins, He sent divers sorts of flies among them, which devoured them; Asaph began with the words, “He sent divers sorts of flies” or “He, Jehovah God, stretched out, extended and directed a mixture or swarm of insects known as flies” “among them” which means “in the midst of them, the people of Egypt”, “which devoured them” or “that fed upon, consumed and destroyed them, the people of Egypt”. Asaph referred to when Jehovah God dispatched a swarm of “flies” upon the people in Egypt which consumed them. (See Exodus 8:21-24)

The verse goes on to say, “and frogs, which destroyed them. Asaph continued with the words, “and frogs” or “and swamp or marsh leaping reptiles known as frogs”, “which destroyed them” which means “that corrupted, ruined, spoiled and rotted them, the people of Egypt”. Asaph referred to when Jehovah God sent “swamp leaping frogs” among the people of Egypt, and those “frogs” corrupted, ruined and spoiled them. (See Exodus 8:2-15)

When we consider the words in this verse, we see how Asaph continued to recall the amazing miracles of Jehovah God performed while the people of Israel were captives in Egypt. He dispatched “flies and frogs” so the people in Egypt suffered and were corrupted by them. This was another wonder performed on behalf of the people of Israel. The Israelites were unaffected by the “flies and frogs” because God preserved them. He desires to have this type of relationship with every person through His Son Jesus who came into the world to die on the cross for the sins of all mankind. When we surrender our lives to Him, He will forgive our sins, grant us everlasting life and help us to understand even though His judgment falls upon others, we will be preserved.

Next time Asaph says Jehovah God, “gave also their increase unto the caterpillar … and … the locust”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
