Can God Furnish a Table? - Psalms 78:19

In Psalms chapter seventy-eight Asaph shared how the people of Israel in the wilderness, “tempted God in their heart by asking meat for their lust”, and in chapter seventy-eight and verse eighteen of Psalms Asaph said, “Can God furnish a table in the wilderness?” where we read,

Yes, they spoke against God; they said, Can God furnish a table in the wilderness?

The verse begins, Yes, they spoke against God; Asaph began with the words, “yes, they spoke” or “even so and indeed they, the people of Israel, uttered, declared and made proclamations” “against God” which means “in opposition to the Divine judge, ruler and Supreme God”. Asaph said the people of Israel made proclamations in opposition to the Divine judge Jehovah God.

The verse continues, they said, Can God furnish a table in the wilderness? Asaph added the words, “they said” or “they, the people of Israel, uttered, declared, proclaimed and asked”, “can God furnish a table” which means “does the Divine judge, ruler and Supreme God have the ability and means to prepare, arrange, set in array and order a meal or spread” “in the wilderness” or “within the dry, barren, solitary, arid and desert place”? Asaph shared how the people of Israel asked whether the Divine judge was able to prepare and arrange a meal for them while they were in the desert place.

When we think through the words in this verse, we see how Asaph recalled the time when the people of Israel were complaining in opposition to Jehovah God about their food. He provided manna to them, but they were dissatisfied and questioned whether God could arrange a meal for them while they were in the desert. God is able to do anything He desires, and we should always remember that He satisfied our greatest need when He sent His Son Jesus into the world to die for our sins. When we believe and trust in Him as our personal “Savior and Lord”, He will forgive our sins, grant us everlasting life and provide His Holy Spirit to remind us of His constant provision of daily physical and spiritual food.

Next time Asaph shares how Moses, “smote the rock, that the waters gushed out”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
