People Eating and Filled - Psalms 78:29

In Psalms chapter seventy-eight Asaph shared when Jehovah God sent the people of Israel through the wilderness, “He rained flesh also upon them as dust, and feathered fowls like as the sand of the sea. And he let it fall in the midst of their camp, round about their habitations”, and in chapter seventy-eight and verse twenty-nine of Psalms Asaph shared how, “they did eat, and were well filled” where we read,

So they did eat, and were well filled: for he gave them their own desire;

The verse begins, So they did eat, and were well filled: Asaph began with the words, “so they did eat” or “therefore, then, wherefore and on this account they, the people of Israel, devoured and consumed”, “and were filled” which means “and were sated, fulfilled, surfeited and glutted”. Asaph said the people of Israel ate of the quail sent by Jehovah God and were surfeited and glutted with them.

The verse continues,for he gave them their own desire; Asaph added the words, “for he gave them” or “because, since and on account that he, Jehovah God, granted, bestowed and provided” “their own desire” which means “their, the people of Israel's, own personal wishes, longings, lusts, appetites and covetousness”. Asaph referred to the way Jehovah God provided the people of Israel with their own personal longings and lusts.

When we consider the words in this verse, we learn through Asaph about the people of Israel eating until they were gorged with food, and the reason they were able to do this was because God provided their longings and lust. The people of Israel were dissatisfied with God's provision of manna, and they complained. Rather than rejecting these people, God provided for them in abundance. (See Exodus 16:11-12) God wants to provide for everyone, and this is why He gave His Son Jesus to be crucified on the cross for the sins of all mankind. When we surrender our lives to Him, He will forgive our sins, grant us everlasting life and teach us to desire what He desires and not just to have Him fulfill our own longings and lusts.

Next time Asaph shares how, “they were not estranged from their lust”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
