Days Consumed in Vanity - Psalms 78:33

In Psalms chapter seventy-eight Asaph shared when Jehovah God provided food and water for the people of Israel in the wilderness and slew the stoutest of them for their covetousness, “for all this they sinned still, and believed not for his wondrous works”, and in chapter seventy-eight and verse thirty-three of Psalms Asaph shared how, “their days did he consume in vanity” where we read,

Therefore their days did he consume in vanity, and their years in trouble.

The verse begins, “Therefore their days did he consume in vanity, ... Asaph began with the words, “therefore their days” or “wherefore, then and on this account their, the people of Israel's, time periods and division and spaces of time” “did he consume” which means “did he, Jehovah God, end, complete, accomplish and finish” “in vanity” or “in emptiness”. Asaph said because the people of Israel continued to sin, Jehovah God made them to complete their time in emptiness.

The verse continues,... and their years in trouble.” Asaph added the words, “and their years” or “and their, the people of Israel's, measure of time and indication of age” “in trouble” which means “in dismay, sudden terror, ruin and alarm”. Asaph said Jehovah God caused the measure of time of the people of Israel in the wilderness to exist in terror, ruin and alarm.

When we consider the words in this verse, we learn how Asaph recalled the punishment that the people of Israel who wandered in the wilderness experienced because they continued to sin against God. Although God provided for the people of Israel, they disobeyed His ways and complained against Him. This caused them to suffer “empty days” and “troublesome years”. God wants to bless people, and His desire is to have a personal relationship with every person through His Son Jesus. When we believe and trust in Jesus as our “Savior and Lord”, He will forgive our sins, grant us everlasting life and keep us from “empty days” and “years” of terror and alarm.

Next time Asaph shares, “when he slew them, then they sought him”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
