In Psalms chapter seventy-eight Asaph reminded the people of Israel when they journeyed through the wilderness how they “provoked” God, “to anger with their high places, and moved him to jealousy with their graven images. When God heard this, he was wroth, and greatly abhorred Israel. So that he forsook the tabernacle of Shiloh, the tent which he placed among men. And delivered his strength into captivity, and his glory into the enemy's hand”, and in chapter seventy-eight and verse sixty-two of Psalms Asaph said Jehovah God, “gave his people over also unto the sword”, where we read,
He gave his people over also unto the sword; and was wroth with his inheritance.
The verse begins, “He gave his people over also unto the sword;” Asaph began with the words, “He gave his people” or “He, Jehovah God, surrendered and delivered up his, Jehovah God's, human beings both male and female” “over also unto the sword” which means “even so and indeed up to the sharp cutting instrument, axe, dagger or knife”. Asaph said Jehovah God delivered up His people, the people of Israel, even and indeed to be butchered with the axe, dagger, mattock or knife.
The verse goes on to say, “and was wroth with his inheritance.” Asaph continued with the words, “and was wroth” or “and existed as filled with ire, indignant and angry” “with his inheritance” which means “with his, Jehovah God's, portion, possession and heritage”. Asaph said Jehovah God was angry with His heritage which was the people of Israel.
When we meditate upon the words in this verse, we learn through Asaph how Jehovah God allowed His people, Israel, to be overtaken and butchered by their enemy's sword because He was angry with them. They chose to worship other gods and idols, and they made “high places” to observe their religious practices. In other words, they forsook Jehovah God. God's desire is to have a personal relationship with everyone, and He sent His Son Jesus to die on the cross to pay for the sins of all mankind. When we surrender our lives to Him, He will forgive our sins, grant us everlasting life and keep us safe from His wrath. (See 1 Thessalonians 5:9)
Next time Asaph says, “the fire consumed their young men”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
