In the book of Nehemiah, Nehemiah said, “I went out by night by the gate of the valley, even before the dragon well, and to the dung port, and viewed the walls of Jerusalem, which were broken down, and the gates thereof were consumed with fire”, and in chapter two and verse fourteen of Nehemiah, Nehemiah said, “I went to the gate of the fountain”, where we read,
Then I went on to the gate of the fountain, and to the king's pool:
but there was no place for the beast that was under me to pass.
The verse reads, “Then I went on to the gate of the fountain, and to the king's pool:”. Nehemiah began with the words, “then I went on to the gate of the fountain” or “at that time I, Nehemiah, departed, journeyed and travel toward the entry portal or opening belonging to the spring or well”, “and to the king's pool” which means “and toward the royal ruler and leader's pond or resting place such as a reservoir”. Nehemiah shared how he proceeded toward the entry portal belonging to the spring or well and toward the royal rulers reservoir.
The verse continues, “but there was no place for the beast that was under me to pass.” Nehemiah added the words, “but there was no place” or “however, nonetheless, notwithstanding and moreover there existed not one location or spot” “for the beast” which means “on behalf of the animal or livestock” “that was under me to pass” or “which was beneath me, Nehemiah, to go through or cross over”. Nehemiah shared how not one location was found for the animal he rode upon to cross over or go through at the “king's pool”.
When we meditate upon the words in this verse, we discover how Nehemiah continued to view the walls of the city of Jerusalem as his journey led him to the “fountain gate” and the “king's pool”. Each of these places were in need of repair, and even as he came near them, he discover there was no location in which the animal he rode upon could cross. Place by place and location by location God was revealing to Nehemiah the task ahead, and sometimes God shows His purposes and will in advance of completing the work. In like manner God gave prophetic messages through His prophets that He would send His Son Jesus into the world to die on the cross and be raised from the dead three days later to provide salvation from sins for all mankind. Jesus fulfilled God's mission, (See John 19:30) and when we believe and trust in Him as our personal “Savior and Lord”, He will forgive our sins, grant us everlasting life and rebuild our lives according to His purposes and will for us in His Kingdom. This is God's work shown in advance and completed for all who will believe.
Next time Nehemiah says, “then went I up in the night by the brook” so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
Until tomorrow…there is more…
