The
writer of Hebrews told his readers they “ought to give
the more earnest heed to the things which we have heard”,
because there was the possibility we would “let them
slip”. In chapter two and
verse two of Hebrews the writer shares concerning “a
just recompense of reward”
where we read:
For if the
word spoken by angels was steadfast,
and every
transgression and disobedience received a just recompense of reward;
The
verse begins, “For if the word spoken by angels was
steadfast,...” The writer
began with the word, “For” which
means “because, even, indeed, no doubt, seeing then, therefore and
verily” “if the word”
or “whether and forasmuch as the sayings, decrees, mandates and
orders” “spoken” which
means “uttered, articulated, declared and disclosed” “by
angels” who were “messengers,
envoys, ones who are sent, and messengers from God” “was
steadfast” which means
“stable, fast, firm, sure and trusty”. In other words, since the
word of “angels was sure and trustworthy, we should pay particular
attention to what the writer declares next.
The
verse goes on to say, “and every transgression and
disobedience received a just recompense of reward;”
The writer continued, “and every transgression”
which means “each, any, all, the whole and everyone of the going
over, breaking, disregarding, violating of the ratified or Mosaic
law” “and disobedience” or
“hearing amiss, unwillingness to hear and inattention” “received”
or “took hold of, carried, claimed, procured, caught and obtained”
“a just” which
means “according to right, righteous and equitable” “recompense
of reward” or “payment of
wages due and requital”. Every “unwillingness and inattention”
to God's law brought a “payment” which was owed by the person
doing wrong.
When
we think through these words in Hebrews, we understand how the writer
is showing the validity of the “angels” words as well as
the “retribution” for disobedience to the law of God as a set up
for what he is about to declare. The “angels” words were
true, and those who disobeyed the law were “rewarded” for
their bad behavior. Jesus, God's Son is so much greater than each of
these examples, and while we consider the impact of “the angels”
and the “reward” for “transgressions and disobedience”
to the law of God, let us remember how faithful the Lord is to His
Son and His word.
Next
time we see
the writer ask, “How shall
we escape, if we neglect so great salvation”,
so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
