The writer of
Hebrews has shown us the superiority of Jesus, God's Son, to both the
“prophets” of old time and “the angels”. In
chapter one and verse five of Hebrews, the writer asks to which of
“the angels” did God refer as His Son where we read:
For unto
which of the angels said he at any time, You are my Son, this day
have I begotten you?
And again,
I will be to him a Father, and he shall be to me a Son?
The
verse begins, “For
unto which of the angels said he at any time, You are my Son, this
day have I begotten you?” The
writer began with the words, “For
unto which”
or “even, indeed, no doubt, seeing then, therefore and verily unto
whom, what and withal” “of
the angels”
which refers to “the envoys, ones who are sent and the messengers
from God” “said
he”
or “spoke, uttered or commanded God” “at
any time”
which means “at some former or afore time”, “You
are my Son”
which means “you are God's offspring, descendant and posterity”,
“this day”
or “this very, current and now day” “have
I begotten you” which
means “born, engendered, caused to arise and excited you”. None
of the angels were “born”
of God but were rather created by Him.
The
verse goes on to say, “And
again, I will be to him a Father, and he shall be to me a Son?” The
writer continued, “And
again”
or “also, even, then, likewise and indeed further, in renewal,
repetition, anew and moreover”, “I
will be”
which means “God shall come, have and follow” “to
him”
which refers to “Jesus, God's Son” “a
Father”
or “the originator and transmitter of one who has infused His own
spirit into other and actuates and governs their minds”, “and
he shall be”
which means “God's Son shall come, have and follow” “to
me” which
refers to “God” “a
Son”
or “a descendant and one of the posterity of God”? None of the
angels were exalted to the position where God was their “Father”
and they were His
“Son”.
When we think through these words in Hebrews, we see how
no one was put into a position like Jesus. He was God's “only
begotten” Son, and none of the angels enjoy that orientation.
We are given an opportunity to know Jesus Christ as our Lord and
Savior, and today is “the day of salvation”. No other
entity or being is able to save, and as the writer of Hebrews
continues to emphasize how “superior” Jesus is, we should be all
the more convinced to submit our lives to Him.
Next
time we see
the writer show how the angels were told to “worship”
God's Son Jesus,
so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
Until tomorrow…there is more…
