Thus
far in the book of Hebrews we have learned about Jesus' superiority
over “prophets”
and
“the angels”,
and how He was the “first-begotten”
of
God who rules over “angels”.
He “laid the
foundation of the earth, and the heavens were the works of His
hands”.
In chapter one and
verse eleven of Hebrews we see how the earth and heavens “shall
perish” but Jesus
“remains”
where we read:
They
shall perish; but you remain; and they all shall wax old as doth a
garment;
The
verse begins, “They
shall perish; but you remain;” The
writer began with the words, “They shall perish” which
refers to “the heavens and earth shall be destroyed, put out of the
way entirely, be abolished, rendered useless and put to ruin”;
“but” which is a
disassociation conjunction that means nevertheless, nonetheless,
moreover or “what is about to be written takes precedence over what
has previously been stated” “you remain”
which means “God, and His Son Jesus continue and stay
permanently.”. Though the “heavens and the earth”
shall pass away, Jesus Christ shall continue permanently.
The
verse goes on to say, “
and they all shall wax old as does a garment;” The
writer continued, “and
they all” which
refers to “each, every, any, the whole, everyone and all things”
“shall wax
old”
or “be made ancient, worn out and obsolete” “as
does a garment”
which refers to “the same manner or way in which raiment, clothes,
cloaks, robes, vestures and apparel fade away”. In the same manner
an article of clothing becomes “worn out and obsolete”, the
“heavens and
the earth”
shall as well.
When
we meditate upon these words in Hebrews, we see the eternal nature of
God and His Son Jesus versus temporary components such as “the
heavens and earth”.
The second law of thermodynamics states, “that as
energy is transferred or transformed, more and more of it is wasted”.
It also states that there is a natural tendency of any isolated
system to degenerate into a more disordered state.” This law is
true for the “heavens and the earth” as well. Everything
will “wax old” or be destroyed, however, God shall never
be diminished or be “destroyed”
Next
time we see
the writer share how God will “fold
up”
the heavens and the earth “as
a vesture”,
but Jesus shall remain the “same”,
so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
Until tomorrow…there is more…
