The
Hebrew writer has declared Jesus to be the preeminent One over all
other entities and powers. He is God's Son, and therefore “heir”
of all things in the universe. Jesus used the angels as His swift
and powerful “ministering spirits”, and God declared His
“throne” to be “for ever and ever”. His scepter was to
be “righteousness”, and in chapter one and verse nine of
Hebrews we see how God “anointed” Jesus “with the oil
of gladness above” all others where we read:
has
anointed you with the oil of gladness above your fellows.
The
verse begins, “You
have loved righteousness, and hated iniquity; therefore God, even
your God,...” The
writer began with the words, “You
have loved” which
means “the people whom the writer of Hebrews addressed were
welcoming to, entertaining with , fond of and dearly loved toward”
“righteousness”
or
“the state
of him who is as he ought to be, righteousness and the condition
acceptable to God ”,
“and
hated”
which means “loved less and detested” “iniquity”
or “the conditions without law or contempt of the law which was
wickedness”; “therefore”
which
is a conclusion word that means “” “God”
which refers to “the Godhead bodily and trinity which is comprised
of God the Father, Christ the Son and the Holy Spirit”, “even
your God” or “the audience's Godhead bodily and trinity which is
comprised of God the Father, Christ the Son and the Holy Spirit”.
Jesus loved “righteousness”
and “hated
iniquity”,
so God His Father made a proclamation over Him.
The
verse goes on to say, “...has anointed you with the oil
of gladness above your fellows.” The
writer continued, “has anointed you” which
means “consecrated Jesus to the Messianic office, and
furnishing him with the necessary powers for its administration”
“with the oil” or “fuel or
anointing olive oil” “of gladness” which
means “exceeding or extreme joy” “above your fellows”
or “those sharing in and partaking as a partner in work, office or
dignity”. God “anointed” Jesus
with “exceeding joy” that far surpassed anyone else with whom He
had to do.
When
we meditate upon these words in Hebrews, we understand how Jesus
“loved righteousness”, and “hated iniquity”. Because of this
He was “anointed” by God with the “fuel” of exceeding and
extreme joy”. Are we joyful today? Perhaps as we consider and
follow the way Jesus was in this world God shall bless us with his
“anointed oil of gladness” that we may experience true joy in our
relationship with Him and those with whom we have to do.
Next
time we see
the writer share how God “in
the beginning hast laid the foundation of the earth”,
so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
