The
children of Israel “provoked”
God when they came out of “Egypt by Moses”,
and this caused the writer of Hebrews to challenge his readers to
daily “exhort one another”
“lest” they “be
hardened through the deceitfulness of sin”.
In chapter three and verse seventeen of Hebrews the
writer shares about how God was “grieved forty years”
“with them that had sinned” where we read:
But with
whom was he grieved forty years? was it
not with them that had sinned,
whose
carcasses fell in the wilderness?
The
verse begins, “But with whom was he grieved forty years?”
The writer began with the word,
“But” which is a
disassociation conjunction that means what is about to be written
takes precedence over what was just stated “with whom”
or “with the certain ones”
“was he grieved”
which means “God was wroth, displeased and disgusted with” “forty
years” or “four decades of
time”.
The
verse goes on to say, “was
it not with them that had sinned, whose
carcasses fell in the wilderness?” The
writer added, “was it not with them
that had sinned”
which is all one Greek word “hamartanō”
which means “the ones who missed the mark, erred, were mistaken and
wrong”, “whose carcasses”
which means “dead bodies or corpses” “fell”
or “were thrust down under judgment and condemnation” “in
the wilderness”
which refers to “the solitary, lonely, desolate and uninhabited
desert”. It was those who “sinned”
that grieved God, and the result of “grieving”
God by these insolent people was death “in
the wilderness”.
When
we think through these words in Hebrews, we realize the impact the
unbelieving people of Israel had upon the Lord as they wandered in
the wilderness. We also discover the consequences for their unbelief.
God Almighty desires to have a relationship with people through His
Son Jesus Christ, and should they forsake Him and His path to
salvation, they will have “sinned” against God, “grieved”
Him, and shall find themselves like unto the children of Israel whose
“carcasses fell”.
Next
time we see
how these “unbelievers”
“should not enter into his rest”,
so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
