According
to the writer of Hebrews, “we are made partakers of
Christ, if we hold the beginning of our confidence steadfast unto the
end”. In
chapter three and verse fifteen of Hebrews we see the
writer share more about this condition as he exhorts his readers
,“Today if you will hear his voice” where we read:
While
it is said, To day if you will hear his voice, harden not your
hearts, as in the provocation.
The
verse begins, “While it is said, To day if you will hear
his voice,...” The writer
began with the words, “While it is said”
which means “in, with and by it is uttered, spoken, affirmed and
maintained” “Today”
which refers to “this very and present day and happening” “if
you will hear” or “in case
you will hearken, give audience, attend to and consider”
“his voice” which means
“God's sound and speech”. There was a certain time period in
which the idea of the “present” time would be available for
people to “give audience and consider”.
The
verse goes on to say, “ ...harden not your hearts, as in
the provocation”. The writer
continued, “harden not”
which means “do not make hard, obstinate and stubborn”, “your
hearts” or “the reader's
center of all physical and spiritual life”, “as in the
provocation” which refers to
“the wilderness time of irritation and rebellion”. God provided
exhortation for people to listen to Him rather than making their
“hearts hard” like
the children of Israel did in the wilderness.
When
we think through these words in Hebrews, we realize how patient and
caring the Lord is. He gave opportunity for people to listen rather
than make themselves “obstinate” and “rebellious” against
Him. Jesus Christ made a way for people everywhere to obtain “eternal
life”, and those who believe in Him as Savior and Lord shall never
die spiritually. Those who “harden” their “hearts”
like the children of Israel did in the wilderness, shall never know
the everlasting life He has promise to those who trust Him.
Next
time we see
the writer share how God was “some,
when they had heard, did provoke”,
so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
Until tomorrow…there is more…
