The
Hebrew writer told his readers “we
which have believed do enter into rest”,
and they shall “enter”
“although the works were finished
from the foundation of the world”.
The writer stated even “God did rest
the seventh day from all his works”,
and in chapter four and verse five of Hebrews the
writer challenges his readers again with these words,
“If they shall enter into my rest” where
we read:
The
verse begins, “And in this place
again,...” The
writer began with the words, “And”
or “in
addition to and likewise” “in this
place again”
which means “with the same anew, renewed or repeated”. The
Hebrew writer referred to Psalm chapter ninety five and verses eight
through eleven as he once again draws his conclusions concerning the
“rest”
of God.
The
verse goes on to say, “ ...If they
shall enter into my rest.” The
writer added, “If they shall”
which means “whether and inasmuch as the people who hear the word
of God and obey it”, “enter”
or “come into and arise to” “my
rest”
which refers to “God's calming, desisting and quiet”. Once again
the writer quotes the conditional concept of “rest”
provided by
God Almighty.
When
we meditate upon these words in Hebrews, we see the importance of the
“rest” of
God. Not only was it demonstrated in Genesis chapter two when God
ceased from His creation, but it is also referenced in Psalm chapter
ninety five. Jesus Christ said, “Come
unto me, all you that labor and are heavy
laden, and I will give you rest.” (Matthew
11:28), and this was His reason for
coming. He desired to provide “eternal rest”
for everyone who will believe in Him as Savior and Lord, and He is
willing to forgive all their sins if they willingly ask. May all who
read these words understand the “rest”
that comes from being in a relationship with Jesus.
Next
time we see
the writer share how “some
must enter therein”,
so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
