The
writer of Hebrews warned his readers to “take heed”,
“lest there be in any of” them “an evil heart of
unbelief, in departing from the living God”.
In chapter three and verse thirteen of Hebrews the writer tells his
readers to “exhort one another daily” where we
read:
But exhort
one another daily, while it is called To day;
lest any
of you be hardened through the deceitfulness of sin.
The
verse begins, “But exhort one another daily, while it is
called To day;” The writer
began with the word, “But”
which is a disassociation conjunction that means what is about to be
written takes precedence over what was just stated, “exhort
one another” which means “call
for, summon, address, intreat and instruct each other” “daily”
which refers to “throughout, toward and along each and every
natural day between the sunrise and sunset or time used in general”
“while it is called”
or “until or unto the time it is uttered in a loud voice by name”
“To day” which
means “this very, present and happening day”. The readers of
Hebrews are to “exhort” one another every day while there is
opportunity to do so.
The
verse continues, “ lest any of you be hardened through
the deceitfulness of sin.” The
writer added, “lest any of you”
which means “so that no certain one of the readers” “be
hardened” or “made hard,
rendered obstinate or stubborn” “through the
deceitfulness” which means “by
way of the delusion” “of sin”
or “being mistaken or missing the mark”. If daily “exhortation”
is avoided, the readers of Hebrews may be “made hard or stubborn”
by the delusion of sinful behavior.
When
we think through these words in Hebrews, we see how the writer
desired for his readers to “encourage and call for one another”
every day because there was always a possibility they would fall into
the “delusion” of “sinful” behavior. The idea was they should
“exhort” each
other “before the coming of the day of glory and judgment at
Christ's coming”. Jesus Christ promised to come again, and while we
wait for that day of judgment to come, we should inspire and support
one another in our Christian walk. Let us “listen to and hear”
the Hebrew writer's exhortation, and help keep one another from the
“deceitfulness” of a “heart that errs”.
Next
time we see
the writer share how we are made “partakers
of Christ”,
so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
