God Spoke by Prophets Hebrews 1:1

Though much conjecture has been made over who wrote the book of Hebrews, whether it was Paul the apostle, Barnabas, Apollos or another of the early church apostles, we shall concentrate our study upon the content of these wonderful scriptures inspired by God through His Holy Spirit which show the superiority of Jesus Christ over all other venues. We begin our study by looking at chapter one and verse one where we learn how God “in times past” “spoke by His prophets” where we read:

God, who at sundry times and in divers manners spoke in time past unto the fathers by the prophets,

The verse begins, “God, who at sundry times and in diverse manners spoke...” The writer began with the word, “God” which refers to “the Godhead and trinity which is comprise of God the Father, Christ the Son and the Holy Spirit”, “who at sundry times” which means “by many portions, times and ways” “and in diverse” or “different and many” “manners” which means “ways, methods or forms” “spoke” or “uttered, preached and told by emitting a sound with the tongue”. In the times before Jesus, God “spoke” to people in various ways and at different times.

The verse goes on to say, ...in time past unto the fathers by the prophets,” The writer continued, “in time past” or “a great or long time ago” “unto the fathers” which refers to “the nearest ancestors, parents, forefathers and founders of a nation” “by the prophets” or “one who is moved by the Spirit of God and therefore his organ or spokesman who solemnly declares to men what he has received by inspiration especially concerning future events and in particular such as relate to the cause and kingdom of God and to human salvation”. God spoke through His “prophets” to the “forefathers” who proceeded those who now know about Jesus Christ His Son.

When we think through these words in Hebrews, we understand that the writer begins with the comparison of the “prophets” of old as He desires to show Jesus' superiority to them. “Prophets” such as Isaiah, Jeremiah, Ezekiel and Daniel were commissioned to “speak” on God's behalf, and though they presented God's truth in words and examples, they were not God's Son who is the Savior of the world. In the book of Hebrews, Jesus Christ will be shown above and beyond all other means for man to have a relationship with God, and as we study these words, let us understand the great importance and position of God's only begotten Son.

Next time we see the how God “in these last days spoken unto us by his Son”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
