What is Man or the Son of Man Hebrews 2:6

As we continue to study the book of Hebrews, we see the writer show by examples why “the angels” are “ministering spirits” to Jesus and are not superior to Him. God put the “world to come in subjection” to Jesus and in chapter two and verse six of Hebrews the writer refers to when King David asked, “what is man, that you are mindful of him” where we read:

But one in a certain place testified, saying, What is man, that you are mindful of him?
or the son of man, that you visit him?

The verse begins, “But one in a certain place testified, saying,...” The writer began with the word “But” which is a disassociation conjunction that means what is about to be written takes precedence over what was previously stated, “moreover, nevertheless or nonetheless” “one in a certain place” which means “a person in a certain and near place” “testified” or “earnestly, religiously, charged, attested, solemnly affirmed and confirmed by witness that it should be believed”, “saying” which means “affirmed, maintained, taught, exhorted, advised, commanded, directed, intended and meant”.

The verse goes on to say, “What is man, that you are mindful of him? or the son of man, that you visit him?” The writer continued, “What is man” or “Who is a human being whether male or female”, “that you are mindful” which means “reminded, recalled and remembered” “of him” which refers to “the human being whether male or female” “or the son of man” which refers to “the offspring, descendant and posterity of human beings whether male or female”, “that you visit him” or “that God would look upon or after, inspect and examine to see how he is”. The writer of Hebrews referred to King David's question in Psalm chapter eight and verse four, “What is man, that you art mindful of him? and the son of man, that you visit him”. It is a marvel that God would “observe and examine” people at all, and this was a marvel to both King David and the writer of Hebrews.

When we think through these words in Hebrews, we understand that it is a great wonder that God would give any regard unto man, and yet, He does. God Almighty not only created us but desires to be intimately involved in our lives. We, however, are allowed to keep Him away from us which is very unwise. Though we may wonder why God in His omnipotence should give any regard to us, let us realize He does, and submit ourselves completely to Him and His dear Son Jesus Christ.

Next time we see the writer share how God“made” Jesus “a little lower than the angels” but “crowned” Him with “glory and honor”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.

Until tomorrow…there is more…
