Thus far we
have learned from the writer of Hebrews of the superiority of Jesus
to all the “prophets” who spoke to the “forefathers”
of old time. In chapter one and verse four of Hebrews, the writer
shows how Jesus is “so much better than the angels” where
we read:
Being made
so much better than the angels,
as he has
by inheritance obtained a more excellent name than they.
The
verse begins, “Being made so much better than the
angels,...” The writer began,
“Being made” or
“came into existence, began to be, happened and received being”
“so much” which
means “of quantity, many and vastly” “better than”
or “more useful, serviceable,
advantageous and excellent” “the angels”
which refers to “the messengers, envoys, ones sent”. God's Son
Jesus was made so much more “useful, excellent and serviceable”
than the “angels”
who were God's messengers.
The
verse goes on to say, “...
as he has by inheritance obtained a more excellent name
than they.” The writer
continued, “as he has by inheritance obtained”
which means “received by lot or inheritance” “a more
excellent” or “different,
surpassing and varying in time” “name”
which is “used for everything which the name covers,
everything the thought or feeling of which is aroused in the mind by
mentioning, hearing, remembering”
“than they” which refers to
“the angels of God”. Jesus was “made so much better than the
angels” because He inherited a “far surpassing name” to theirs.
When
we consider these words in Hebrews, we see how superior God's Son
Jesus is to “the angels”.
Jesus was “God's Son” and therefore the “heir”
which put Him in a greater position than anyone else. Jesus has a
“name” that is above every
name including the angels, and those who are wise will believe in Him
as their Savior and Lord. All praise be to the One who hast the “more
excellent name”!
Next
time we see
the writer ask to which of the angels did God say, “You
are my Son, this day have I begotten you”,
so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
Until tomorrow…there is more…
