As
the writer of Hebrews continued to share how Jesus is superior to
“the angels”, he
asked “how shall we escape, if we neglect so
great salvation;” because God”
was
“also bearing them
witness, both with signs and wonders, and with divers miracles, and
gifts of the Holy Ghost”.
In chapter two and verse five of Hebrews, we learn how God has “not
put in subjection” “the world to come”
to “the angels”
where we read:
For unto
the angels has he not put in subjection the world to come, whereof we
speak.
The
verse begins, “For unto the angels has he not put in
subjection the world to come,...” The
writer began with the words, “For”
or “because, even, indeed and no doubt” “unto the
angels” who are “the
messengers, envoys, ones who are sent and messengers from God” “has
he not put in subjection”
which means “has not arranged, placed under, subordinate and be
subject to one's self” “the world”
or “the earth, globe and inhabitants of the earth” “to
come” which means “to be
about, intend, have in mind and think toward”. God has not
“subordinated” “the world to come”
to the “angels”.
The
verse continues, “...whereof we speak.”
The writer added, “whereof”
which means “about, concerning, on account of, because of, around
and near” “we speak” or
“utter a voice, emit a sound, articulate and tell”. The writer of
Hebrews and those who witnessed with him spoke of how Jesus would be
the one to whom “the world to come”
was to be in “subjection”.
When
we think through these words in Hebrews, we see how the “world
to come” is not to be made
“subject” to “the angels”.
Jesus is to have preeminence over this world and the “world
to come”, and this was and is
appointed by God. In the gospel of Matthew chapter twenty eight and
verse eighteen Jesus said, “All power is given
unto me in heaven and in earth.”,
and since Jesus is the “preeminent One” over this world
and the “coming one”, it is wise to align ourselves with Him in
repentance and obedience.
Next
time we see
the writer refer to the scriptures where King David asked, “what
is man, that you are mindful of him?”,
so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
