The
writer of Hebrews said that God would “declare”
Jesus' name “unto”
His “brethren”,
and He would “put”
His “trust in him” which
lead to the Hebrew writer declaring in chapter two and verse
fourteen of Hebrews we see how Jesus was made “partaker of flesh
and blood” so He “might destroy him that had the power
of death”, “the devil” where we read:
Forasmuch
then as the children are partakers of flesh and blood, he also
himself likewise took part of the same; that through death he might
destroy him that had the power of death, that is, the devil;
The
verse begins, “Forasmuch then as the children are
partakers of flesh and blood, he also himself likewise took part of
the same;” The writer began
with the words, “Forasmuch then” or
“since, because and seeing that” “as the children”
which refers to “infants or
small boys and girls” “are partakers”
which means “those who come into communion or fellowship, are
sharers, associates and partners” “of flesh”
or “the soft substance of the living body which covers the bones
and is permeated with blood of both man and beasts” “and
blood” which means “life
giving blood”, “he also himself”
or “Jesus himself” “likewise”
which means “in a similar way or manner” “took part”
or “shared, participated or partook” “of the same”
which means “flesh and blood as well”. People were created with
bodies of “flesh and blood” and to identify with them, Jesus also
became a “flesh and blood” human being.
The
verse goes on to say, “that through death he might
destroy him that had the power of death, that is, the devil;”
The writer continued, “that through death”
which means “so by way and means of “separation whether natural
or violent of the soul and the body by which the life on earth is
ended” “he might destroy him”
or “render idle, unemployed, inactivate, inoperative, ceased,
abolished, loosed and discharged the one” “that had the
power” which means “held,
possessed and kept fast the force, strength and dominion”
“of death” which refers to
“separation whether natural or violent of the soul and the body by
which the life on earth is ended”, “that is”
as in “that is to say”, “the devil” which
means “prone to slander, slanderous, accusing falsely and a
calumniator” and refers to “the one who opposes the cause of God,
satan, the author of evil who persecutes good men”. The reason
Jesus became “flesh and blood” is that He might experience
“death” and in doing so would “abolish and render idle” the
“devil's power”
concerning the “death”
of people.
When
we think through these words in Hebrews, we know this to be the
“incarnation” of Jesus in the flesh. Jesus came to the earth as a
human being so He could experience “death” like we shall
some day, however, His purpose was to “destroy” the one
who had “power” over “death”, “the devil”.
“Death”, and the fear of it, has a hold on people
everywhere, and because it is inevitable for all, Jesus came not only
to identify with us in it, but also to “abolish” the one who
controlled it. This was demonstrated in “resurrection” of Jesus
Christ where “death” was “defeated”, and the
promise for our “eternal life” was accomplished. Now all who
“confess with” their “mouth the Lord Jesus, and
believe in their heart that God has raised him from the dead, shall
be saved” (Romans 10:9)
Next
time we see
the writer share how Jesus was sent to “deliver
them” “who were subject to bondage”,
so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
