The
writer of Hebrews continued to show how Jesus was preeminent over
“the angels” as he
referred to King David's questions, “What is man, that
you art mindful of him? or the son of man, that you visit him?”,
and in chapter two and verse seven of Hebrews we see the writer refer
to King David's words of how man was made “a little lower than
the angels” where we read:
You made
him a little lower than the angels; You crowned him with glory and
honor,
and did
set him over the works of your hands:
The
verse begins, “You made him a little lower than the
angels;” The writer began with
the words, “You made him”
which refers to “God decreased and lessened in authority, dignity,
rank and influence man to be” “a little lower”
or “less and inferior in authority, dignity, popularity, rank and
influence” “than the angels” which
refers to “the messengers, envoys, ones who are sent and messengers
from God”. God created man so that his position was just under that
of the “angels”.
The
verse continues, “You crowned him with glory and honor,
and did set him over the works of your hands:” The
writer added, “You crowned him”
which means “encircled, adorn and honor with a crown and the victor
in a contest” “with glory”
or “opinion, judgment, view and estimate with a good opinion
concerning one which results in praise, honor and glory” “and
honor” which means “valuing
by which a price is fixed, paid or received”, “and did
set him” or “put, place,
appoint, constitute, declare, render, make and cause to be”
“over the works” which
refers to “in a position over God's business, employment,
enterprise, undertaking and that which any one is occupied” “of
your hands” which means “God's
help, agency, means, might, activity and power”. God gave “man”
“honor and glory”
and allowed him to be and overseer of the “works”
He created.
When
we think through these words in Hebrews, we see how God created man
just a little “less in authority and influence” than His angels,
and He gave man the right to be over His creation. This though was a
wonder to King David and to this writer of Hebrews who used King
David's quote as his reference. (Psalm 8:4-5). We too should marvel
that God has given such a great position to man, and those who are
wise will understand this same God desires a relationship with us
through the death and sacrifice of His Son Jesus. May all who read
these words “see and hear” what God is saying to everyone who
will pay attention to Him.
Next
time we see
the writer share how God “in
the beginning has laid the foundation of the earth”,
so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
