The
writer of Hebrews warned his readers to “fear,
lest, a promise being left us
of entering into his rest, any of you should seem to come short” of
the “rest” or “promise land” of God. In chapter four and
verse two of Hebrews, the writer reminds his readers
“For unto us was the gospel preached” where
we read:
For unto
us was the gospel preached, as well as unto them:
but the
word preached did not profit them, not being mixed with faith in them
that heard it.
The
verse begins, “For unto us was the gospel preached, as
well as unto them:” The writer
began with the words, “For unto us was”
which means “also, both, even, so then and therefore unto the
writer of Hebrews and his readers was” “the gospel
preached” which means “the
good news or glad tidings were announced, brought and proclaimed”,
“as well as” or
“according, even or just as” “unto them”
which refers to “unto the children of Israel”. The “good news”
of God was “heard” by the writer of Hebrews and his readers in
the same manner as the children of Israel “in the wilderness”.
The
verse goes on to say, “but the word
preached did not profit them, not being mixed with faith in them that
heard it.”
The writer
added, “but”
which is a disassociation conjunction that means what is about to be
written takes precedence over what was previously stated “moreover,
nevertheless and nonetheless”, “the
word preached”
or “the speech, uttering, what someone has said, decreed, mandated
and proclaimed” “did not profit
them”
which means to “assist, be useful or advantageous”, “not
being mixed”
or “not commingled, united or assimilated” “with
faith” or
“assurance, belief and fidelity” “in
them”
which refers to “the children of Israel who wandered in the
wilderness” “that heard it” or
“gave audience to, were not deaf toward, attended to and considered
the word preached”. Because the people who heard the word of God
did not “have faith in” and “believe” it, “the
word” was
“unprofitable” to them.
When
we think through these words in Hebrews, we see the value in
believing the word of God. Without trust and faith in God's word,
there is no usefulness or advantage, however, when we believe “the
gospel” of God and trust Him with our lives, we are in the best
place we can be. Jesus Christ came to share the “good news” of
God with all who live. The “gospel” is that Jesus Christ
came to pay the price for every person's sins, and by applying this
“good news” to our lives, we can be saved and live eternally with
the Lord. May all who read these words not only “hear”, but also
“believe”.
Next
time we see
the writer declare“we which
have believed do enter into rest”,
so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
