The
Hebrew writer told his readers to “labor to enter into”
the “rest” of
which Jesus spoke because they might “fall after the same
example of unbelief” shown in
the children of Israel who were not allowed into the promise land.
In chapter four and verse twelve the writer shares how the “word
of God is quick, and powerful, and sharper than any two-edged sword”
where we read:
For the
word of God is quick, and powerful, and sharper than any
two-edged sword, piercing even to the dividing asunder of soul and
spirit, and of the joints and marrow, and is a discerner of
the thoughts and intents of the heart.
The
verse begins, “For the word of God is
quick, and powerful, and sharper than any two-edged sword,...” The
writer began with the words, “For the
word”
which means “Because, since and on account of the speech, decree,
mandate, moral precepts, discourse and teaching” “of
God” which
refers to “the Godhead bodily and trinity which is comprised of God
the Father, Christ the Son and the Holy Spirit” “is
quick” or
“alive, active and blessed”, “and
powerful”
which means “active, effectual and operative”, “and
sharper” or
“more keen and cutting” “than
any” which
means “each, every, any, all, the whole, everyone and all things”
“two-edged”
which refers to “two edges” “sword”
or “a large knife, curved sword or straight sword for thrusting”.
God's “word” is as a “sword-like” weapon that is “alive,
effectual and cutting” it's target.
The
verse goes on to say, “ ...piercing even to the dividing
asunder of soul and spirit, and of the joints and marrow,...” The
writer continued, “piercing” which
means “the going through and penetration”, “even
to the dividing asunder”
or “the division, partition, separation and distribution” “of
soul” or “the heart, mind
and emotions” “and spirit”
which refers to “the vital principal by which the body is
animated”, “and of the joints”
or “the joining points of the bones” “and marrow”
which refers to “a soft fatty substance in the cavities of bones in
which blood cells are produced”. God's word is so “sharp”
that is able to divide a person's soul from their spirit.
Finally
the verse says, “...and is
a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart.” The
writer added, “and is a discerner”
or “fit and skilled for judging” “of
the thoughts”
which means “the thinking and consideration” “and
intents” or
“acts of thinking, considerations, notions, conceptions,
meditations, understandings, will and manner of feelings” “of
the heart”
which refers to “the center of all physical and spiritual life”.
In addition to being “sharp”,
God's word is “fit and skilled” for judging things people are
thinking and what they “intended” within their “center of
physical and spiritual life”.
When
we think through these words in Hebrews, we see the intense value of
the “word of God”. Not only does it bring us to the knowledge of
God, but it also brings us to the knowledge of ourselves. We don't
always know our hearts, and the word of God helps to expose them.
Should we have any doubts about Jesus Christ and His role as Savior
and Lord, let us turn to the “word of God”, the Bible, and
discover the truth concerning Him...and ourselves.
Next
time we see
the writer share about our “great
high priest”, “Jesus the Son of God”,
so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
