Giving Earnest Heed to Things Heard Hebrews 2:1

The writer of Hebrews has shown Jesus' preeminence over the old time “prophets” and the “angels” who are “ministering spirits to the heirs of salvation”. In chapter two and verse one of Hebrews, we are exhorted to “give the more earnest heed to the things which we have heard” where we read:

Therefore we ought to give the more earnest heed to the things which we have heard,
lest at any time we should let them slip.

The verse begins, “Therefore we ought to give the more earnest heed to the things which we have heard,...” The writer began with the word, “Therefore” which is a conclusion word that means “in conclusion, on account of and since this is true” “we ought” or “it is necessary, it behooves and is right and proper for us” “to give the more earnest” which means “more abundantly, in greater degree and more earnestly above others ” “heed” or “turn the mind to, attend, be attentive and care” “to the things which we have heard” which refers to “are endowed with the faculty of hearing, not deaf to, understand and perceive with the sense of what is said”. Because of the writer's words concerning Jesus, readers and he should pay particular attention to what he has written.

The verse continues, “...lest at any time we should let them slip.” The writer added, “lest at any time” which means “that perhaps, whether or not and in no way” “we should let them slip” which means “glide, be carried, pass by or not obtain”. If readers and the writer do not “give the more earnest heed” to the words he wrote, there is potential they will not “be obtained”.

When we think through these words in Hebrews, we see how the writer desires for his readers to pay attention to the facts he has presented about Jesus being superior to “the angels”. If not, the things he has told us may “pass away” and not be obtained by us. The idea is, “pay attention” and “earnestly care for” the words he has shared. Jesus Christ desires that we know His word, and those who are wise will find themselves in the Bible persistently and consistently. Let us “heed” this writer's words before the things he has shared “pass us by”.

Next time the writer of Hebrews begins to show the importance of Jesus' word by referring to how “the word spoken by angels was steadfast”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
