Jesus,
according to the writer of Hebrews, was not only superior to the
“prophets”
and “angels”,
but He was also involved in the creation of the “heavens
and the earth”.
They would eventually perish, but He would “remain”
for ever. None of the “angels”
were ever told by God to “sit on my
right hand”
of authority, and in chapter one and verse
fourteen of Hebrews we see how the “angels”
are commissioned to be “ministering spirits”
to the “heirs of
salvation” where we read:
Are they not all ministering spirits, sent forth to
minister for them who shall be heirs of salvation?
The
verse begins, “Are they not all
ministering spirits,...”
The writer began with the words, “Are
they not all”
or “are not each, every, any, the whole and everyone of the angels”
“ministering”
which means “relating to the functional performance of service or
employed in serving” “spirits” or
“the simple essences which are devoid of all or at least of all
grosser matter who possess of the power of knowing, desiring,
deciding, and acting”. “Angels”
are “serving spirits” who perform the will of God.
The
verse goes on to say, “...sent forth
to minister for them who shall be heirs of salvation?”
The writer continued, “sent forth”
or “who
depart, are dismissed and sent away” “to
minister”
which means “serve and execute the commands of God” “for
them” which
refers to “on behalf of and by reason of the people”
“who shall be heirs”
or “those who receive, inherit or obtain by right a part of an
inheritance” “of salvation”
which means “deliverance, preservation, safety and redemption”.
“Angels”
are “sent out” by God to “serve” those who shall “inherit”
His Salvation through Jesus Christ.
When
we think through these words in Hebrews, we understand more clearly
the responsibilities of the “ministering
spirits”
or “angels”
of God. They are to “perform” whatever God desires, and the
beneficiaries are those who “trust in, rely upon and cling to”
Jesus Christ as Savior and Lord. If we are wise, we should desire to
be the recipients of the “angels'”
help who are controlled and commanded by Jesus Christ, and as we do,
may the Lord bless us with these “ministering
spirits”.
Next
time we begin a new chapter and see
the writer tell his readers
“to give the more earnest heed to the things which we have heard”,
so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
