“There
remains” “a rest to the people of God”
according to the writer of Hebrews for those who have received the
“rest” of which
Jesus spoke, and in chapter four and verse ten of Hebrews we
see how the person who has “entered into his rest” has
“ceased from his own works” where we read:
The
verse begins, “For he that is entered into his rest,...”
The writer began with the words,
“For he that is entered”
which means “even, indeed, no doubt, seeing then and therefore the
one who has gone in and arisen” “into his rest”
which refers to “God's calm and quiet through His Son Jesus
Christ”. The writer references the person who has already “entered
into” the “rest”
that God provided.
The
verse continues, “ ...he also has
ceased from his own works, as God did
from his.” The
writer added, “he also has ceased”
which means “the person has made quiet, restrain and cause to
desist”, “from his own” or
“their own” “works”
which means “business, employment and that which any one is
occupied”, “as God”
which refers to “the Godhead bodily and trinity which is comprised
of God the Father, Christ the Son and the Holy Spirit” “did
from his”
or “God was separated from, departed and fled from His works”. On
the seventh day of creation, God rested, and those who have received
Jesus Christ's “rest”
have “ceased”
from theirs.
When
we consider these words in Hebrews, we see the benefit of those who
have “entered into God's rest” - they “stop” their own
“works” to accomplish salvation. Jesus already paid the
price for our sins, and when we “enter into” His “rest”,
we no longer have to “work” to be saved which would never
be effective anyway. We only have to believe in the finished work of
Jesus Christ. This should be attractive to everyone who understands
this idea. God “ceased” from creating on the seventh day,
and we may be like Him and “cease” from our “works”
to be saved as well.
Next
time we see
the writer challenge us to “labor
therefore to enter into that rest”,
so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
